OSU!

In my favorite book by Saicho, a Buddhist priest and founder of the Tendaishu sect of Buddhism, there is a saying that goes, "A country's riches in gold and silver are not its treasures. Regardless of one's station in life, when you feel there is nothing you would rather be doing, you are fully committed to that station. The number of such people is the measure of a country's richness. A country's treasures are those individuals who illuminate the regions outside of society's spotlight. Wouldn't everyone want to be such a person?"

This year marks the 16th opening of the yearly Point & K.O. All-Japan Karate Tournament. The never-ending "light" of a great number of people shines in support of this tournament.

Struggling through daily training and conditioning in addition to their internal struggles, the competitors work toward the day of April 22nd. They sweat blood in their efforts to attain peak physical and mental condition. While thinking "I will win! I want to win!" during perpetual training that never seemed sufficient, with clenched fists they filled themselves with fighting spirit and stand here this day.

This event is also supported by the numerous non-competitors who shine their own light in eager support of this tournament. I am truly filled with feelings of appreciation and gratitude for the dedication of these people to their respective tasks. At the time I won the world tournament, I recall sensing an unseen force throughout my entire body -- an unseen force that uplifted me, that was something beyond my own power. These same feelings are with me today.

Competitors, be grateful to those who have provided you with guidance and support, rely on the efforts you have made to reach this day, and show us outstanding matches to which you devote your whole body and spirit.

Moreover, martial arts is my calling in life, and I will illuminate this corner of my country through Odo Karate until my death, continuing my efforts in the study of karate.

Finally, to everyone who supports this tournament, all of the officials, each of the competitors and dojos, and the tournament staff, I extend my greetings with heart-felt gratitude.

At last the time draws near for someone to hold in their hands the championship flag. I hope you will enjoy the tournament.
